International Debutante Ball

The crème de la crème of young American womanhood makes the annual right of passage into formal society at the International Debutante Ball. Some 800 guests survey the damsels in floor-length white gowns, their gloved hands grasping perfect pink bouquets. The girls are greeted in front of their respective US state flag amidst Gatsby-style splendour in Manhattan’s Waldorf Astoria Hotel. Escorts rush the receiving line, up the red carpet and into the Grand Ballroom – cadets from military academies and lucky chaps in white tie make up the mêlée of male attendees, along with nervous fathers and eager bon vivants. When the moment of introduction arrives, each debutante glides onto the parquet: Greenwich gals curtsy as Dallas debs perform the sweeping ‘Texas Dip’. Shall we dance?
